Avatar goes green
Some say, “It’s not easy being green” but Avatar Far Trade begs to differ. Being a member of the Fair Trade Federation we feel confident that we are doing the right thing with our factory and workers in Nepal, but what about closer to home? Therefore when the City of Santa Cruz unveiled it’s Green Business Program (http://www.montereybaygreenbusiness.org) it did not take long for us to jump on board and find out how we could become a Certified Green Business and take the Green Business Program Pledge.
After sending in the Green Business Application, the first step in being certified “Green” was for our store and warehouse to be inspected for compliance with wastewater, storm water, hazardous materials and air. Once we passed this process an audit was performed by an energy conservation professional ensuring we were in compliance with regulatory agencies and meeting the program criteria for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. After we made some minimal changes (such as changing the light bulbs) we were given the green light and presented with a Green Business Program Pledge of Commitment stating that Avatar will maintain compliance and continue to practice resource conservation.
The Green Business Pledge
We believe a successful business is dependent on a healthy environment. We are actively working to show our environmental responsibility to our community by committing to the following objectives:
  • To comply with all applicable regulations and strive to exceed compliance
  • To conserve energy, water, materials and other resources
  • To develop and implement practices that prevent pollution and waste
  • To be an environmentally responsible business within our community
  • To strive for continuous improvement.

  • The nexus between business, community and environment is undeniable. As a small business we want to do all we can locally to help our challenged environment. The Green Business Program is in line with our values as a business and as individuals. We encourage you to look into green business practices and programs in your area and join the pledge to make a difference–it really is easy.
